Here is a link to the New York City Municipal Archives web site where you will find information on how to request Death Certificates.

If you have ever tried to use the New York City death index for the early years you will appreciate this latest database.  If you look at the microfilm for these early years you know that you have to look at every month, every year and every borough. It could take forever.

Now the volunteers of the Genealogy Federation of Long Island have put these records in a very searchable database that will enable you to search with just a push of the button. There are over 2,000,000 records in this database. More will be added as they are completed.

This index was accomplished by scanning the original printed index books and required no typing. One man did all the scanning, Bob Boeckle of the German Genealogy Group. Bob devoted most of his waking hours to scanning and formatting the data into an OCR program. Other volunteers were used for proofreading and editing.

We have received a few questions concerning an age of 999 years. Where the age was unknown a "999 y" was entered. When the date was unknown a 99 was used as the day, and when the certificate number was unknown a "99999" was used. This was not a decision made by us, this is what is printed in the index.

This project of The Genealogy Federation of Long Island was coordinated by Mr. John Martino. If you would like to contribute time to other current projects, please contact Mr. Martino.
