Bring along your favorite finds, artifacts, family heirlooms, clothing, and stories to share with your fellow members. Enthusiasm is catching and new ideas often spawn more successful approaches to our research.
February 2, 2012 "The Flight and Forced Displacement of Germans from the East at the end of Presenter Irma Erickson Ms. Erickson will take us through her family's first hand experiences on the journey from East Prussia to Saxony and eventually the United States via western occupation zone displaced persons camps.
March 1, 2012 "Researching New York City Resources Remotely" Presenter: Jordan Auslander As the cosmopolitan gateway to the United States, New York City has always
been a magnet for immigrants. Throughout the United States an estimated 40
million can trace roots to an ancestor who lived in Brooklyn. While many
families passed through or settled in Gotham, not all family members came to
the US, and some of those who remained in Europe and elsewhere may have lost
contact with their American cousins.
April 5, 2012 "An Overview of German Personal and Place Names." Presenter - Richard Haberstroh Dr. Haberstroh is a founding member of the German Genealogy Group and the author of the essential research book German Churches of Metropolitan New York: A Research Guide.
May 3, 2012 “1940 Census - How to search the Census” Presenter - Dorothy Dougherty - Public Programs Specialist, National Archives New York City The 1940 Census will be made publicly available April 2, 2012. Taken during the Great Depression and the New Deal, and on the brink of US involvement in World War II, the 1940 Census documents Americans during a time of national struggle. This workshop will prepare family historians for this release by describing the genealogical information that can be uncovered in this document.
June 7, 2012 "Organizit: Reducing your Genealogical Clutter" Presenter - Rhoda Miller Ed.D., CG Organizit presents creative solutions and problem-solving ideas to genealogy researchers who are interested in getting organized in order to free up mental and physical space for more research! The concept of clutter, how it happens and what to do about it, will be discussed. The organization of computer and paper files, documents, photographs, correspondence, research projects, and research materials will be presented in a lively and entertaining manner. In addition, methods of approaching a genealogy project, or subparts of a project, as well as planning for a research trip will also be presented.
