Index to Criminal Records, New York Federal District Court, Southern District

9,370 records added 04/05/2016 (1960-1965)

This database is an index to over 190,000 criminal cases in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. A federal district court, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York tries federal cases from New York, Bronx, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess and Sullivan counties. The database covers cases from 1831 through 1965 and includes the name of a person or company, the date the case was filed, its case number and often the cause or brief description of the case.

What to Expect to Find in Criminal Case Files

The number and types of documents found in the case files vary. The type of document found most often is the indictment, and in older cases, may be the only document contained in the file. Other documents found most often include pleas of the defendant, warrants and subpoenas, proceedings, recognizances or bonds for appearance, the judgment and commitment, depositions of witnesses, motions, orders, and other papers filed in criminal actions. Transcripts of testimony are sometimes included.
Please note, in most cases these records do not contain personal information useful to identifying individuals, such as the defendant’s age, address, or place of birth.

Records Search: Criminal Records

Please note that the Surname or Company Name (e.g. Last Name) is a required entry field. But since exact spellings are not always known, to aid your search we offer three different ways to specify Surnames...

  1. Exact Match ("is exactly") - This is the default surname search method.
  2. Soundex ("sounds like") - This option enables you to specify a surname spelling it out as best you can, and it will return results that "sound" similar to what you spelled out.
  3. Wild Card - With this option you can replace part of the surname with a * to match any number of letters, or _ to match a single letter. E.g., Sch* will return all names starting with Sch. Similarly, Schl_tz might return results such as Schlitz or Schlotz.

NOTE: The wild card option applies ONLY to the surname. You can just enter the first few letters of a First Name; the search automatically adds a wild card to the end of the First Name.

For whichever of the above name search options you would like to use, simply select the appropriate radio button option below the input field on the form.
